Baobab Microfinance Company Ltd (BMC) was incorporated as a limited liability company on 23rd April, 2008 and commenced business on 24th April, 2008 to address the inadequate access to financial services for micro and small scale businesses particularly owned and operated by women in Northern Ghana. As part of its core mandate, BMC seeks to attain its vision of alleviating poverty in Northern Ghana by making access to credit a reality to women and as well inculcate savings and investment habits among women. The company has the corporate vision of “Northern Ghana without Poverty” through tailor made Financial Products and Services for women groups.

BMC intends to attain its vision by prioritizing women in its operations and giving opportunity to low income women, micro-entrepreneurs and small scale businesses. This will help them provide better livelihood for themselves and their families through the development of sustainable micro– enterprises and healthy savings lifestyles.

Board of Directors

Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Al-Hassan is the Managing Director of Rahma Company Limited (RCL). Rahma Company Limited is a construction company registered with the Ministry of Works and Housing Class D1K1 (Building Works Class 1, Financial Class 1). He has been Managing RCL since 1989.

He is the sole agent of an international Civil Engineering and Construction Company Ballast Nedam BV based in the Netherlands since 1990.

He was the agent of Marc/Glencore International AG, one of the largest global diversified natural resource commodities companies in the world, producing and trading more than ninety (90) commodities from 1979 to 2011

He is the Chairman of West Africa Hydraulic Limited (WAHL). WAHL is an engineering firm that specialises in hydraulic systems, manufacturing of pumps, motors, cylinders, hoses among others.

He is also the Chairman of Dart Communications Limited including Meridian Infotel Limited. He is the Board Member of Capital Group Limited, and Bonzali Rural Bank.

He has been a Board member of Ghantrex Shipping Company BV since February; 2011. He was a Board member of Ghana Aviation Authority between from 2003 to 2009.

Alhaji Abdul Rahman Al-Hassan holds a certificate in Finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA in the year 2008. He completed a Master degree in Civil Engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London while still working as a full staff at the Tema Development Corporation. Mr. Abdul Rahman Al-Hassan did his BSc. in Civil Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University for Science and Technology (KNUST).

He attended Government Secondary School in Tamale where he gained his GCE A’ Level and GCE O’ Level.

He has a lot of experience working with top class companies such as Passal, a private construction firm located in London, Rainham Timber Engineering in Rainham Essex, UK as well as Bank of Housing and Construction where he held the position of Chief Engineer. He is happily married.

Alhaji Amadu Montia is a seasoned and accomplished banker. He has been the Managing Director of Baobab Microfinance Company Limited since 2010. His enormous experience with Bank of Ghana for twenty nine (29) years had played a significant role in the current success of BMC.

He served the BoG in different capacities especially the banking supervision session where he spent twenty (20) years doing on-site and off-site Supervision of Commercial Banks. He led examination teams to undertake annual on-site supervision of banks like National Investment Bank, Eco Bank, CAL Bank, Ghana Commercial Bank, Agricultural Development Bank, Barclays Bank of Ghana, Standard Chartered Bank, Merchant Bank of Ghana (now Universal Merchant Bank), First Atlantic Merchant Bank among others.

He was involved in the preparation of annual budget for Ghana and that gave him the opportunity to work with international financial bodies likes the IMF and the World Bank under the Research Department of BoG.

Alhaji Amadu Montia had equally supervised a considerable number of rural banks, played a part in the liquidation of BHC and Ghana Coop Bank Limited as well as played a significant role in the GBC rationalization of thirteen (13) of its branches. Alhaji Amadu Montia represented BoG on Hajj board in 1983, 1984, and also from 1986 to 1987. He was a member of Logistic Task Force of Redenomination of the cedi.

He has chaired and served on several boards of directors notable among them are Agricultural Development Bank, Global Access Savings and Loans Limited, First Capital Plus Limited, ARB Apex Bank Limited, Borimanga Rural Bank among others. He has been the president of Northern Chapter of Association of Rural Banks since 2012.

He took all of his academic studies outside the country. Alhaji Amadu Montia did his post graduate course in Economics, Development and Planning from the Institute of Economic Development Studies, Naples in Italy. He is also a graduate in Economics and Accounting from the University of Wales Aberystwyth, UK. He did his Chartered Banking studies at the Institute of Bankers, U.K at the S.W London College, London.

Alhaji, as he is affectionately called is happily married with children. He is a good communicator, result oriented leader, honest and ethical, decisive, motivates staffs and above all he has an extended eye for customers.

Ms. Amina Montia is a Chartered Accountant, with over nineteen (19) years of post-qualification experience in a variety of industries internationally and locally. She has worked in reputable companies such as GEC Plessey Telecommunications and Sema Group Facilities Management in the UK.

She has held executive positions including Director of Finance and Administration of PHC Motors Ltd and Execution Head, Finance and Administration at the Microfinance Small Loans Centre, a very large department covering the whole of Ghana. She was the Financial Controller of Leo Shield Exploration, an Australian company, the Management Accountant at Sema Group Facilities Management PLC in the United Kingdom.

Her experience has involved organizing, evaluation, setting up and monitoring the operations and systems of companies, government and for non-governmental organizations (NGOs). She has helped these organizations meet their objectives and social responsibility in communities where they work. Through capacity building programmes, she has trained associations of women on entrepreneurial skills development (business start up and development), marketing, financial management, microfinance, leadership, assertiveness and effective communication.

Her interest in empowerment of women has led her to spearhead and set up Savannah Women’s Empower Group Ghana (SWEGG), a non- partisan, non-governmental organization working for the economic and political empowerment in all the three regions of Ghana. SWEGG currently has over one thousand (1,000) members. The membership of SWEGG includes women from the grassroots, Shea butter processes, Shea nut pickers, farmers, entrepreneurs, bankers, educationists, students, researchers, development experts and gender equality advocates. She is currently the Convener of SWEGG.

She is the Board chairperson of SLID industries in Accra and sits on the board of Baobab Microfinance Company Limited, Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA). She has served on the board of GPAK (a subsidiary of Graphic Communications Group Limited). Ms Amina Montia is a member of Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. She did her graduate studies in Accounting from the Metropolitan University, formerly Polytechnic of North London.

Mrs. Azara Al-Hassan is a seasoned lawyer with over nineteen (19) years of practice. She is a representative of Ghana on the Alternative Permanent Representation of Ghana to the International Maritime Organization.

She held the Acting Director position of Ghana Maritime Authority (Legal Bureau). She provided legal advice and legal opinion in areas of Maritime and Administration Law, implementation of International Shipping policy, Ratification, accession and domestication of International Conventions, Developing and facilitating the enactment of legislation, Enforcement of regulations, review and execution of legal documents.

She exhibited leadership when she held the front as the legal head of Ghana Shippers’ Council. Aside this, she has worked in a number of reputable organization such as Kuenyehia & Co. and Legal Aid Board.

She is a lecturer at the Regional Maritime University. She lectures International Maritime Law and Insurance. She is a member of distinguish bodies or associations such as Ghana National Continental Shelf Delimitation Project, Petroleum security coordinating centre, Ghana Boundary Commission, ECOWAS Maritime Strategy among others.

She was awarded the United Nations Secretary-General’s prize for the best legislative drafting project for the year 1999/2000-IMLI-Malta.

Mrs. Al-Hassan Prempeh holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Maritime Law from the International Maritime Law Institute. She was confirmed a Barrister & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana when she successfully completed her professional Law Course from the Ghana School of Law. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Law & Political Science from the University of Ghana, Legon. She is happily married with two children.

Mahadi Tahiru joined Baobab as the Head of Operations. He was elevated to the General Manager due to his dedication and hard work. Prior to his appointment, he was the Operations Manager at Bonzali Rural Bank Limited.

He has been with Bonzali for almost a decade and rose through the ranks from Assistance Coordinator at Microfinance department to Project Manager and to Branch manager. He was promoted from Operations to Head of Operation after having successfully championed the computerization of Bonzali Rural Bank Limited.

He holds Bsc Computerized Accounting from Kumasi Polytechnic. He has vast knowledge in banking software. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to banking operations.

Mr. Abel Kwaku K. Bruce is a multi talented young man with a special flair for quantitative analysis.

He spent seven years working with Sinapi Aba Savings and Loans Limited in different capacities. He joined Sinapi Aba Trust as a Financial Service Officer (FSO) and by dint of hard work rose to become the Branch Manager at Walewale. He has enormous experience banking and financial management which he obtained from his stay at Sinapi Aba Savings and Loans Limited.

Mr. Abel Kwaku K. Bruce is currently pursuing his terminal degree in Finance at the University of Adonai in Benin Republic. He did his first degree in Agricultural Technology with options in Agric. Economics and Extensions He holds a Master of Philosophy in Agricultural Economics from the University for Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana. He obtained a certificate in Risk Management from the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management.

Mr. Bruce was awarded a scholarship from the International Food Policy Research Institute for emerging as one of the winner for master’s thesis scholarship. He was the winner for inter-house science and mathematics quiz organized as Ghana Secondary School 25th anniversary celebration. He is married with three children.

Patrick Yenteeb holds an MBA in Finance from University of Cape Coast, a BA in Economics and Entrepreneurship Development from the University for Development Studies and a Certificate in Banking Operations from Chartered Institute of Bankers Ghana.

He has quite an extensive working experience in credit to his advantage. He worked as Project Officer under sustainable Livelihood Project of NewEnergy,(a local NGO based in Tamale), Credit Manager for MT Microfinance Ltd, and as a Branch Manager for Innovative Microfinance Ltd, Tamale. Whiles on the job, he has gone through numerous out trainings on banking operations, credit administration and risk control, portfolio and delinquency management, branch customer experience management, building high performing teams and branch strategy, credit ratios and interpretations and so forth.

Management Staff

Sulemana Mansisu joined Baobab as a Pioneer staff serving in the capacity of Head of Susu. He was later assigned to the position of Project Manager before his current role as Marketing Officer. He has over Nineteen (19) years experience in Rural Banking, Microfinance and Adult education. He is a trained Teacher (Certifivcate ‘A’) from the Bagabaga Training College. Prior to his engagement with Baobab Microfinance, he worked as a Microfinance officer with Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) and Bonzali Rural Bank.

Zakaria Abukari Sadiq joined Baobab as a Pioneer staff serving in the capacity of Head of Microfinance. He was later assigned to the position of Development Officer before being elevated to his current role as Project Manager. He has over Twenty (20) years experience in both Rural Banking and Adult education. He holds a certificate in social work from the School of social work, Accra Ghana. Prior to his engagement with Baobab Microfinance, he worked as a Microfinance officer in Bonzali Rural Bank and Al Furqan foundation.

Samin Luki Montia has over Nine (9) years experience in Credit and Risk. He joined Baobab in December 2010 as Head of Credit and Risk Management. Prior to his engagement with Baobab Microfinance, he worked as a Credit and Risk Officer with First Capital Plus Savings and Loans. He had also worked as a Customer Care officer with Quadrant Limited, Bristol-England. He holds a BA (Hons) in Town and Country Planning from the University of West England.

Abdul Rahaman Abdul Razak is the Head of Internal Audit. He joined Baobab in September 2012 as a Field Officer and later moved to the position Assistant Internal Auditor. He has six (6) years experience in Projects and Audit. He holds a BA (Hons) in Administration (Accounting) from the University of Education-Winneba.

Lansah Tahiru joined Baobab in October 2010 as a Field Officer and later transferred to the Finance department as Accounts Clerk. Following his dedication and commitment towards duty, Mr. Tahiru was promoted to the position of Assistant Accountant on January 2014 and subsequently to the position of Accountant in October 2014. He has over Ten (10) years experience in Accounting and Banking operations. He holds a Bcom (Accounting) from the University of Cape Coast and currently pursuing an Msc Microfinance from the University of Cape Coast.

Adam Mikdad joined Baobab as a Secretary in August 2016. He was later assigned additional responsibilities of Company and Board Secretary respectively. Mr. Adam served on these roles until the company decided to create an HR department where he applied for the position of HR Manager and was successful at that on April 2018. He holds a B.sc (Marketing) from the University of Cape Coast and current pursuing an MA Human Resource Management from the University of Cape Coast.
